Which came first: The Training or the Egg?

Yesterday marked the completion of our third breakfast series, appropriately titled “Eggs and Exchanges,” and our second training class for both potential and existing customers. It was an exciting time for both Right Media employees and clients alike as we connected with business partners, met new people, and learned more about our product in our offices here in NYC.

Wendi Sturgis, our Client Services Director, started off the day with a conversation about the growth of the Exchange and the exciting future of Apex (Yahoo’s new advertising technology platform currently under development), while everyone enjoyed their breakfast. Clients and Right Media employees were given the chance to mingle for a couple of hours before the training session began, encouraging the relationships and community we strive for on the Exchange.

After breakfast, training began and covered three topics: Passing Age and Gender Data, Remarketing, and the Sales Enablement Program. Jacob Ross and Jeanne Hwang kicked off with an overview of the Professional Services Group, a team that provides consulting services and advanced Exchange-enabled solutions based on specific client objectives and needs. The Age and Gender training focused on the benefits of Age and Gender passing and how to utilize it in the Exchange while Remarketing, presented by Andreas Vagelatos, focused on utilizing segment pixels to remarket campaigns to particular audiences. Jacob Ross then went on to discuss the Sales Enablement Program, which provides opportunities for revenue growth by enabling sales teams with tools and strategies to succeed in selling the Exchange.

If you would like to access the presentations from this valuable event, please check them out in the Community Forums, located under the “Community Tab” in Yield Manager. If you have any questions about the material, or would like to explore some of the topics introduced in these trainings, please feel free to contact your Account Manager.

And to answer that age old question, the Eggs came first and they were delicious! See you at the next breakfast.

Going for brokers

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

We released broker fee functionality for our network clients last year. In this post I wanted to summarize why you might want to consider using broker fees to better manage your Exchange business.

What are brokers?

“Broker” is a catch-all moniker covering a range of third parties an ad network could engage with to enhance their business, such as:

  • an entity that acquires advertisers in foreign markets where the network has no sales force, or
  • a business that provides the network with premium targeting data

What are broker fees?

Broker fees are designed for situations when you need to compensate a third party based on the performance of a campaign and you want the financial impact to be baked into the auction. Expressed as either a percent of advertiser spend or a flat CPM, broker fees allow you to embed the cost of such payouts directly into your line items.

How do broker fees work?

By activating broker fees on a line item, you are telling the system that part of the advertiser’s spend needs to be allocated to an entity other than the seller (publisher). To accomplish this - during the auction - the adserver will reduce the advertiser’s bid by the amount of the broker fee. If the line item wins that auction, information about the winning bid and the broker fee amount are logged to reporting.

Where do I find broker fees?

As a network on the Right Media Exchange, you can set broker fees on any line item (managed or linked) where you are the seller. You can also set them at the insertion order level, which creates a default fee on all future line items under that IO.

What reporting is available?

The Profit Report allows network users to review the impact of broker fees on line items after the fact. In addition, users can run reports to determine the amounts owed to brokers at the end of each month. Finally, networks can give brokers access to reports too, enabling them to review the amounts they are owed.

What do you think?

We are very excited about this sophisticated and unique feature offered by the Right Media Exchange and look forward to your feedback! If you have questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to me via your account manager.

Breakfast Series and Training Event (San Francisco)

February 26th, 2008

Today is February 21st 2008. It is a special day for Right Media as it marks the end of our second breakfast series and first training seminar for both potential and existing clients.

What a success it turned out to be! Not only was the turnout great, but the enthusiasm for the Exchange and the interaction between attendees was truly heart-warming! It makes us really appreciate being a part of something so cutting-edge and dynamic. Judging from the positive feedback we received, these events are sure to become a staple event every few months to ensure everyone is kept abreast of new information and opportunities available on the Exchange.

The first part of the event was the breakfast series, lead by Mike Gaffney and Canice Murphy. The breakfast was an informal gathering to chit chat about Right Media and the online market arena. The second portion of the event consisted of training on three main topics — passing and using age and gender data, remarketing 101 and leveraging behavioral data, and finally, our Sales Enablement program. Provided by our Professional Services group, the Sales Enablement program has successfully helped increase revenue for our clients by arming their sales forces with the tools to seize new revenue-driving opportunities. Judging from the response, this is one area that seemed to create a buzz.

We will be having a similar event in New York targeted to our East Coast customers on March 4th, 2008. If you are interested in attending please contact your account manager or sales rep for more information. We would love to see you there!

Please let us know if you have any particular topics that you would be interested in hearing about and we will make an effort to incorporate them into our future events. Thank you to all of those that attended and helped make it a fabulous day!

It’s always fun trying to get people to ‘get’ what we’ve got going on for them here with Direct Media Exchange.

After all, we’re not selling plungers; we’re giving everyone an opportunity to help them manage the advertising on their websites and increase their revenue. We’re a free hosted ad server, but we also embrace things like openness, transparency, and the efficiency of an auction. Rather than look over each other’s backs, our members–advertisers and publishers alike—collaborate.

And I really like metaphors, so here’s one that describes DMX: it’s more like a waterfall. I might sound like I am trying to be cute, but I am dead serious… (more…)

DMX just passed a milestone: 300 million.

Yes. We’re now consistently posting 300 million impressions per day in traffic from within Direct Media Exchange .

Part of it is just because DMX “works for the pub”–the small to medium sized publisher to be exact. But this 300 million milestone is big for us. Here’s some more of what it looks like from our vantage point here at our Eugene offices:

  • In Q4 2007, compared to Q4 2006, total ad traffic for DMX (measured in impressions) : 151% growth rate
  • In Q4 2007, compared to Q4 2006, we saw a near 950% growth in revenue payouts to DMX publisher members. WOW!
